Tour of Mill Neck Manor
The inside of one of grandest houses on the Gold Coast isn’t something you see every day. In fact, in the case of Mill Neck Manor House, it’s not something you see every week either – as tours are available to the public only once a month, on Sundays.
Of course, Mill Neck Manor is an equally rare place. An enormous 34 room Tudor Revival mansion set on 86 acres overlooking the Long Island Sound, Mill Neck Manor was once the home of Robert Leftwich Dodge and his cosmetic heiress wife, Lillian Sefton Dodge. Enter the solid oak doorway – itself reputed to be between 400 and 500 years old – and you’re in for something(s) special. There are leaded stain glass windows -- $10,000 each in 1920s dollars – depicting Shakespearean plays overlooking the main stair landing. The plasterwork on the main floor ceilings alone took two years to complete. It takes 90 minutes just to see it all.
Tours are in groups of 25, start at 11:00 am, and include tea and scones – plus extra time for the gift shop and strolling the grounds. $25 for adults; $20 seniors 55+, $15 students with ID; $5 children 12 and under. Photography, pets, and unaccompanied children are verboten.
