Thursday Sand Castle Contests at Hither Hills State Park

Starting your weekend by hitting the beach? Adults and kids alike show off their architectural and construction skills at the Thursday Sand Castle Contests at Hither Hills State Park in Montauk. Since this particular Thursday is right after Independence Day, why not create something patriotic?

Instead of a traditional sand castle, you could build The White House or the Lincoln or Jefferson Memorials. Instead of a mermaid, why not Lady Liberty? Instead of a generic head, how about the head of Uncle Sam or the four faces of Mount Rushmore? The Weekly Sand Castle contest is open to all ages and each week prizes will be awarded to the best sculptors in several categories through August 31.

Hither Hills has a ton of activities and amenities aside from the beach that will keep you coming back the entire weekend, including bike paths, hiking trails, fishing, birdwatching and more. Vehicle entry is $10/day. For more info on everything this State Park has to offer, visit their website at
